CHISZ Conference 2016

As CHISZ celebrated its sixtieth anniversary in 2016, it was fitting that the theme of the 2016 Heads’ Conference was “Honouring the Past, Celebrating the Present, Shaping the Future”, held at Troutbeck Resort, Nyanga.

Fittingly for such a celebration the invited speakers this year were all absolutely first-class – while the delegates benefited hugely from two extremely engaging, challenging and uplifting talks from Simon Hurry (the founder of the Human Strategy group in South Africa) and one from Stuart Pattison (an ex-Zimbabwean and current founder of Headstrong based in South Africa), the other excellent talks were all presented by Zimbabweans: Jonah Mungoshi, Mark Kluckow, Ian Mathieson, Frik De Beer and Heather Wells. The topics covered included Staff Appraisals, Team Synergy, Special Needs, the iGeneration, Sustainability in Schools, Psychology in Sport, Managing in Uncertain Times. In addition four Heads made up a panel discussing what lessons have been learned through CHISZ during these past sixty years while Neil Todd (previous CEO of CHISZ) opened the Conference.

The Conference also provided an opportunity for Heads and Governors to express their appreciation and respect to those Heads standing down at the end of this year: Jon Calderwood (at Hartmann House, who earlier this year celebrated one hundred terms as a Head), Frik De Beer (Whitestone School), Jacqui Robertson (Chisipite Senior School) and Angela Charidza (Watershed College). Between them they have been Heads for eighty-five years! CHISZ salutes and thanks them all and
wishes them a well deserved retirement.

At the same time CHISZ held a welcome lunch with members of Stanco for those Heads who gained membership of CHISZ at the Conference, these being Sue Ellis (Sharon School) and Dennis Anderson (Eaglesvale High).

In the midst of the stimulating programme there was an opportunity for Heads to relax during the traditional sporting afternoon, which included golf, tennis, bowls, fishing and croquet as well as at an enlightening and entertaining inter-provincial quiz evening, while lunchtimes were enhanced with wonderful outdoor musical performances from Hillcrest College, Watershed College and the Peterhouse schools.

CHISZ was very grateful for the generous sponsorship of Old Mutual and CABS, Fawcetts Security, Enbee, BUPA, Schoolbooks4Africa, ZB Bank, BancABC, Nissan, Mac Brothers and Prashant Shah while over thirty exhibitors took up the chance to network with Heads on the Exhibitors’ Day.
